'It is fantastic,' Rams coach says
STRASBURG -- "It's just fantastic," said Strasburg Coach Glenn Proctor after the Rams concluded an undefeated and untied season Friday night by flogging Northwestern District Clarke County, 30-6.
The Rams won the Skyline District -- the first championship ever won by Strasburg, said coach Proctor, with the school's first perfect record in its 21-year football history.
Halfback Frank Zirkle rushed for over 100 yards in each half Friday to bring his total to 1,107 -- four yards better than the school record set by Ron Ashcraft in 1967.
Zirkle ground out 220 yards, more than half of the 414 the Rams ran up against the Eagles' 88.
Clarke County's one touchdown raised the number of points scored against Strasburg this season to 37.
"I know that's a defensive record," assistant coach Sonny Bayles said. "And we have held all of our opponents to less than 100 yards rushing each game."
"We don't have any superstars," added coach Proctor. "We just have a good team that puts out a unified effort."
Then he looked to next week's regional championship game against Fluvanna.
"We're not ready to quit yet," Proctor said. "We've been playing for Strasburg up to this time, but now we are playing for the Skyline District. We owe it to our district to win."
In the background, his players were chanting:
"We're No. 1. We're No. 1."
