Storm closes area public schools, cuts power to some

Winter Storm Virgil, which dumped more than a foot of snow in some western states as it moved eastward, brought a heavy, wet snow to the Northern Shenandoah Valley overnight. As a result, public schools in Winchester, Frederick, Shenandoah and Warren county schools are closed today.

The Virginia Department of Transportation reports moderate - snow and ice-covered - primary and secondary roads in the region, including the interstates.

All three Lord Fairfax Community College locations are closed.

Shenandoah County offices will open at 10 a.m. today.

The Frederick County School Board office will open at noon today.

Rappahannock Electric Cooperative had about 4,400 customers without power as of 6 a.m. today, according to a press release. The majority of outages are in Warren, Orange, Madison, Albemarle, Fauquier, Spotsylvania and Greene counties.
