VDOT to switch to flashing arrows for turns

The Virginia Department of Transportation plans to install flashing yellow arrow signals at intersections in the region beginning on Tuesday.

A flashing yellow arrow, for left-turning traffic only, indicates drivers may turn after they yield to oncoming traffic, according to VDOT information. VDOT expects to complete installation by Dec. 18, weather permitting. Drivers should remain alert for lane closures at the intersections.

VDOT plans to modify signals at the following intersections:

  • Rockingham County – Va. 42 at Va. 257 in Dayton
  • Warren County – Va. 55 at Va. 647 (Dismal Hollow Road)
    Frederick County
  • U.S. 11 at Va. 661 (Redbud Road) and Interstate 81 exit 317 on-ramp
Va. 624 (Tasker Road) at Va. 636 (White Oak Road)
  • Va. 522 at Va. 756 (Macedonia Church Road)

New signals should improve safety and reduce vehicle crashes at intersections that currently allow left turns on a green, circular light by alerting drivers to yield to oncoming traffic. New signals should reduce wait times and improve traffic flow at intersections controlling left turns with a green arrow.
