The Virginia Genealogical Society will hold its spring conference April 27-28 in Richmond. April 27 is a free day with guided research through the Library of Virginia. April 28 will feature three tracks of four lectures each and the annual VGS meeting at the Four Points by Sheraton-Richmond Airport. Sustainability Matters will host a make-and-take workshop on companion planting in containers at 6 p.m. April 27 at the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley in Winchester. Sari Carp and Lori Kesner will discuss the art of combining vegetables, herbs and flowers to repel bad insects, encourage good ones, and enrich plant nutrition as well as container design and care. The Fine and Performing Arts Club and Student Life will host “Best of Broadway” Cabaret at 7 p.m. April 27 and 28 and at 2:30 p.m. April 29 at the McCoy Theatre on the  Lord Fairfax Community College Middletown campus. The Stonewall Jackson High School Musical Theatre will present Rodgers & Hammerstein “Cinderella” at 7 p.m. April 27 and 28 and 3 p.m. April 29 in the old gym. The Democratic Caucus will meet at 10 a.m. April 28 at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Woodstock. Guest speakers on defense matters will be Chuck Smith with a presentation on the SM-3 defensive missile and Nathan West with a presentation on the F-35 fighter jet.

St. Luke Brethren Church in Woodstock will host a Country Ham Pot Pie and Tenderloin Dinner 11 a.m.-7 p.m. April 28 to benefit the church’s Relay for Life Team. The Town of New Market and the Area Library will co-hot an Arbor Day event at 1 p.m. April 28 at the library. The theme will be “Help Keep Our Furry Forest Friends Safe”. There will be a guest speaker from the Forestry Department for adults along with activities for children including storytime and a visit with Smokey Bear.  There will also be door prizes.

Antioch Church of the Brethren, west of Woodstock, will celebrate their 150th Anniversary with Old Time Sunday at 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. April 29.  Those attending are encouraged to dress in the 1860’s time period. Sky Meadows State Park will host the Spring Fever 5K 9-11 a.m. April 29. The race, made possible by Roots and Rocks Adventures, starts and ends at Turner Pond. The Shenandoah County 4-H Council in cooperation with Shenandoah County Ruritan Clubs will sponsor the 36th annual 4-H Bike-A-Thon 2-4 p.m. April 29 at the Peter Muhlenberg Middle School in Woodstock. The event is open to 4-H and non-4-H riders over the age of 5; bike helmets required.  Pledges can be secured before or after the Bike-a-Thon and participants can register at the event.  Half of the money will be used for 4-H event scholarships. The Shenandoah Area Agency on Aging will present a six-week Live Well Workshop 9:30 a.m.-12 p.m. Mondays April 30 through June 11 at the Winchester Parks and Recreation building.
