NVDaily updated: Man pleads guilty to child rape

WOODSTOCK — A New Market man is facing life imprisonment after pleading guilty Wednesday in Shenandoah County Circuit Court to raping an 8-year boy in a motel room.

Robert Lee Good, 49, is scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 16. Judge Dennis L. Hupp ordered a pre-sentence report and a sex offender evaluation after Good entered Alford pleas to rape and taking indecent liberties with a child. An Alford plea allows a defendant to maintain he is innocent of a crime while admitting that the prosecution has enough evidence to persuade a judge or jury that he is guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Louis Campola submitted a written statement of the evidence against Good. Prosecutors usually deliver an oral summary of the evidence but Campola said details were too graphic.

Hupp told Campola, “It’s just a matter you don’t want to voice these things in open court.”

Hupp added that he understood Campola’s decision, “given the nature of this case.”
