Here's VDOT's holiday weekend travel update

(From a press release) To help ease Memorial Day travel, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will not permit temporary lane closures from noon Friday, May 23, until noon Tuesday, May 27. Long-term construction zones with concrete barriers and orange barrels will remain in place.

The following work zones might pose temporary delays:

Staunton District
• Interstate 81 (Frederick County): There will be no acceleration lanes for the following ramps entering I-81: Exit 307 northbound and southbound and Exit 315 northbound and southbound. These ramps are under construction. They are open, but vehicles have to immediately merge into the interstate.

Bristol District
• Interstates 77/I-81 overlap: Be alert to the possibility of slowed or stopped traffic in this area of Wythe County due to expected high traffic volumes.
• Interstate 77 East River and Big Walker Mountain tunnels: Be alert for delays due to restoration projects at both tunnels. VDOT has established a toll-free phone number, (866) 7-TUNNEL, to keep motorists informed about travel conditions through the tunnel work zones.

Culpeper District
• Interstate 64 (Albemarle County): There will be repairs and resurfacing of the bridge deck on I-64 westbound at Stockton Creek (milepost 108) in western Albemarle County. One lane will be closed and the remaining lane is restricted to 13-foot-wide loads through the work zone.
• Interstate 66 (Fauquier County): There will be repairs and resurfacing of the bridge deck on I-66 westbound at Route 731 (milepost 22) in western Fauquier County. One lane will be closed to traffic through the work zone. An alternate route has been established to help traffic avoid the work zone by leaving I-66 at Exit 23 and traveling north on Route 17 to Route 55. Turn left onto Route 55 and travel west to Route 688. Turn right onto Route 688 and continue through Markham to reenter I-66 via the interchange at Exit 18.
• U.S. Route 211 (Rappahannock County): The speed limit has been reduced from 45 mph to 35 mph on a four-mile section of the highway from Sperryville west to the Skyline Drive.

Hampton Roads District
• Interstate 64 HOV Lanes: On Memorial Day, Monday, May 26, HOV restrictions will be lifted on I-64. The reversible roadway will be open to all westbound traffic from 1 - 11 a.m. and then to all eastbound traffic from 1 - 11 p.m.
- HOV lanes will resume a normal schedule at 6 p.m. Monday, May 26.
- Note: The HOV reversible roadway lane directions may shift throughout Memorial Day weekend depending on roadway conditions and traffic volumes.
• Interstate 64 Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel: Motorists traveling to Virginia Beach may want to use the Interstate 664 Monitor Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel (MMMBT) as an alternative to I-64's Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel. The MMMBT is less traveled than the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel.
• Interstate 64 (Chesapeake, Exits 289-291): Construction is under way on the Battlefield Boulevard project. While there will be no temporary lane closures over the holiday weekend, motorists should expect general construction delays between Greenbrier Parkway and Battlefield Boulevard.
- VDOT lifted the HOV restrictions on I-64 East and West between the Indian River Road Exit and the Battlefield Boulevard Exit. These lanes are now open to all vehicles during all travel time periods throughout the project. Motorists can visit www.i64info.com for the latest information on the project.
• Outer Banks: Motorists traveling to the Outer Banks may want to take I-664 and the Monitor Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel to save time and avoid the construction at Battlefield Boulevard in Chesapeake.
• Jamestown-Scotland Ferry: The ferry will operate on its normal schedule. The schedule is posted on http://www.virginiadot.org/travel/ferry-jamestown.asp.

Northern Virginia District
• Interstate 95/I-395/I-66 HOV Lanes: Reversible I-95 HOV lanes will be open southbound from 10 a.m. Friday, May 23 until 8 a.m. Sunday, May 25. HOV lanes will open northbound from 8 a.m. Sunday, May 25 until 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 27. There will be no I-95/I-395/I-66 HOV restrictions on Monday, May 26.
• Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project (Interstate 95/495 from the Telegraph Road interchange in Virginia, across the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, to the Maryland 210 interchange): There will be no construction-related lane closures on the Virginia side from noon Friday, May 23, until noon Tuesday, May 27. On the Maryland side, there will be no lane closures beginning 12:01 a.m. Friday, May 23 until 9 p.m. Tuesday, May 27.

Richmond District
• Interstate 295/I-64 flyover (western Henrico County): Expect 11-foot-wide travel lanes and concrete barriers along I-64 east and west between Route 288 (Exit 174) and I-295 (Exit 177).
- The speed limit has been reduced to 55 mph in this work zone.
• Interstate 95 North (Colonial Heights): The right shoulder is closed at the Temple Avenue interchange (mile marker 54). I-95 North motorists are encouraged to be alert to traffic merging onto the interstate from Temple Avenue.

Salem District
• Interstate 81 (Montgomery County): Northbound and southbound drivers need to use extra caution at mile marker 128, near the Ironto Exit. Due to repairs on the bridges over the South Fork of the Roanoke River, I-81 motorists will encounter a work zone with a concrete barrier wall and two narrowed travel lanes in each direction.
- The speed limit has been reduced to 55 mph in this work zone.
• Route 58 (Carroll County): The eastbound Route 58 bridge over Little Reed Island Creek is closed. The bridge is located near Gardner Mill Road between the west limits of Hillsville and Interstate 77. Route 58 traffic is reduced to one lane in each direction and shifted into the westbound lanes for about 0.8 mile.
- The speed limit has been reduced to 35 mph in the work zone.
• Plantation Road (Roanoke County): Work is under way to replace the riding surface of the bridge on Plantation Road over Interstate 81 at the Exit 146 interchange. Traffic on the Plantation Road bridge over I-81 is reduced to one lane, and a temporary signal is controlling traffic. Vehicles wider than 11 feet are not permitted to cross the bridge.
- The speed limit has been reduced to 25 mph in this work zone.
