Friends of the North Fork to celebrate anniversary
TOMS BROOK — Friends of the North Fork of the Shenandoah River will celebrate its 20th anniversary with a fish fry fundraiser and auction on Saturday. The fish will be farmed catfish, not fish out of the Shenandoah River, Executive Director Leslie Mitchell-Watson said in a phone interview last week.

Walking tour shows Woodstock's history
WOODSTOCK — The Woodstock Museum is teaming with a downtown business to offer a guided walking tour of the town. Woodstock Museum President Bob Lowerre said the first walking tours are scheduled for 2 p.m. this Saturday, as well as on Oct. 11, 18 and 25. The museum's board of directors began planning the tour because of a number of requests from visitors and businesses "who were convinced it would be a nice addition to the things we have," Lowerre said.

'Whodunit': Wayside offers Christie classic for October
WINCHESTER — Renowned mystery writer Agatha Christie set the standard long ago for the perfect "whodunit," a formula used on TV shows like "Perry Mason" and the more contemporary "CSI" crime series and its spin-offs. One of her many works, "The Mousetrap" is the longest running play in theatrical history, still stumping audiences in London's West End for more than 57 years and 23,000 performances.

Conservation center to hold open house
FRONT ROYAL — Some of the world's most endangered species can be observed this weekend at the National Zoo's Conservation and Research Center. The CRC will host its 12th annual Autumn Conservation Festival on Saturday and Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the 3,200-acre facility just south of Front Royal on U.S. 522.

Playacting: Five Rings theater brings imagination to stage
FRONT ROYAL — Children's theater is coming to town, and hopes are that local performances will spur a revival of interest in live productions. Five Rings Very Little Theatre at Five Rings Arts & Education Centre, at 620 Virginia Ave., is hosting five plays for children during the 2008-09 season.

60 sounds sweet: Radio station celebrates anniversary with community
FRONT ROYAL — If you're looking for an oldie but a goodie, you don't have to look any further than WFTR AM 1450. The radio station at 1106 Elm Drive in Front Royal celebrated its 60th anniversary on Friday. About 200 people attended the event, which was replete with local radio personalities and, of course, a birthday cake.
