Friday Night Football -- Week 6 -- Live Blog (from the sports desk)

Here's a list of tonight games:
Handley 16, Skyline 12
Madison County 26, Stonewall 13
James Wood 35, Warren County 26
Luray 35, Strasburg 0
Clarke County 24, Page County 6
Millbrook 33, Brentsville 23

4:38 -- I'm Tommy Keeler filling in for Chuck this week as he gets hitched and I'm literally sitting in his chair. This week should be another exciting week and I'll try to keep everyone informed with updates as much as possible.

6:39 -- Sorry for the delay. I took a break to get a bite to eat with Craig Juer at the Strasburg Theatre. Good food! Tonight we have a fine selection of reporters out covering games for us. Craig is at the Skyline-Handley game, Dennis Atwood is at Stonewall, Jeremy Stafford is at Warren County, Robert Edmonds is at Strasburg and Alyssa Goodson is at Clarke County. Look for their stories on the games in tomorrow's sports section.

6:53 -- Feel free to send comments on the games throughout the night. Also, check out Tim Tassa's story in tomorrow's section on Shenandoah's game with Christopher Newport. There is also another diary entry from Sherando's Hunter Taylor. Games should be starting soon and I'm sure updates will be coming shortly after.

7:37 -- Craig Juer reports Handley leads 3-0 9:09 left first quarter. This could be a high-scoring game.

7:52 -- I want to give a shout-out to the Strasburg class of 88, celebrating its 20-year reunion at the Strasburg game tonight. Yes, I am a part of that class and I won't comment on my age.

8:06 -- Update from Nokesville, Brentsville 10-0 over Millbrook. That's very surprising. The Pioneers need to turn it around quickly or their playoff hopes may be down the drain.

8:22 Craig reports that it is still 3-0 Handley at the half. So much for the offense in this one. Handley's strong defensive front has held Skyline to only 10 yards rushing, despite being without Warren Pink (shoulder injury). The Judges are using zone coverage to also slow down Skyline's passing game.

8:28 -- No, Bernie that is not a misprint. That is his name. He's actually one of Handley's better defensive lineman, but he's been battling injuries all year. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the game plays out.

8:33 -- Brentsville is now up 17-7 at the half. The Pioneers will need another strong second half like they had against Spotswood earlier this year if they're going to come back.

8:44 -- Alyssa reports Clarke is up 17-0 at the half. Dennis is reporting a 13-13 tie in the Stonewall game. The Generals are doing it without Colton Koontz, who broke his ankle in last week's win and is done for the year. They led 13-0, but undefeated Madison County came back strong in the second quarter. One note here: Craig was the only one who picked Stonewall. He could gain a game on every one if the Generals can pull it out. John-Michael Pirtle threw a touchdown pass for Stonewall (The Generals don't throw touchdown passes very often). Bernie, you'll be sad to know that Riverheads is up 24-7 at the half on Bath County.

8:55 Skyline has taken a 6-3 lead on a 5-yard TD run by Cliff Woodard. The run was set-up by a 37-yard run by Woodard and a 47-yard reception by Andrew Thorne. There is 7:20 left in the third quarter. I don't think there's any doubt Skyline is for real.

8:59 No, Bernie we do not put wagers on picks. If we did, it wouldn't be looking too good for me these days. There's no way I would wear a Hannah Montana t-shirt! Clarke County plays Madison in two weeks and that should be a great game that could decide the district title. On another note: It looks like Chuck's Tampa Bay Rays will go up 2-0 in their series.

9:16 Jeremiah Wilson just did it again. He returned a punt for a 66-yard TD. Handley leads 16-6 with 11:43 left in the game. That's at least 14 TDs for him already this year.

9:29 Millbrook now leads 21-17 heading into the fourth quarter. I have not heard from the Warren County game, but I will pass that along as soon as I hear something. Madison County now leads Stonewall 26-13 in fourth. Looks like Craig may not gain a game after all. Bernie, I'm not sure what the record is, but he has to be on pace for one. The good news for Handley is he is only a junior.

9:41 Updates! Madison County 26, Stonewall Jackson 13, final. Skyline just scored on a 7-yard pass from Nathaniel White to Thorne. It's now 16-12 in the fourth.

9:49 Another final. Handley beats Skyline 16-12. That puts the Judges at 4-1 this season, while Skyline falls to 5-1.

9:59 -- Another final, Millbrook 33, Brentsville 23. It looks like the Pioneers' offense got it together in the second half.

10:01 The final scores keep rolling in. James Wood beat Warren County in a shootout, 35-26.

10:21 So much for Strasburg's Homecoming. Luray 35, Strasburg 0, final. Clarke County also beat Page County 24-6. Yes, Bernie I will be back next week, while Chuck is on his honeymoon. Thanks for the kind words.

10:42 -- Some noteworthy numbers from tonight: Jeremiah Wilson had 126 yards on 22 carries for the Judges. Andrew Thorne, who was named Homecoming King, had 100 yards on four receptions and a TD. In the James Wood game, the Colonels rushed for 342 yards. Brandon Shiley led the way with 103 yards on 10 carries. Make sure to read our sports section tomorrow for the stories on the games.
