Friday Night Football -- Week 7 -- Live Blog (from the sports desk)

Tonight's games:
Sherando 44, Skyline 20
Clarke County 21, Strasburg 6
Millbrook 42, Warren County 0
Handley 23, Central 6
James Wood 35, Brentsville 14
Luray 41, Stonewall Jackson 35

4:30 p.m., -- This is Tommy Keeler filling in for Chuck once again this week. While Chuck is on the beaches and at Tampa Bay Rays games, I'm stuck in the office for one more week. We have another heavy slate of games on tap tonight. I will do my best to give you updates on the games throughout the evening. Tim Tassa is covering the big Sherando-Skyline game, while Craig Juer is at Clarke County, Jeremy Stafford is at Millbrook, Dennis Atwood is at Central and Alyssa Goodson is at James Wood. Feel free to comment throughout the night on the games.
7:03 --The games should be getting ready to start. Will there be any upsets tonight? I think for the first time this year all of the so called 'experts' picked the same teams in our high school picks this week. We will soon find out if we were right. I wouldn't be surprised to see an upset tonight.
7:22 -- I have the first game report of the night. Millbrook is off to a quick 13-0 lead on Warren County. Andrew Oates connected with Neil Bishop for a 39-yard touchdown. After throwing two interceptions in the opening game of the season, Oates hasn't thrown one since. He will probably go over 1,000 yards tonight.
7:28 -- Millbrook still leads 13-0 end of first quarter. Oates has two TDs and has thrown for 68 yards.
7:41 -- Eric, I actually just talked to Chuck and he laughed when I told him about your comment. He's having a blast at the Trop and has seats along the third base line near the outfield. It's his first time there and he's been a longtime Rays fan. As a Yankees fan, I won't comment on your Red Sox comment. As far as the Skyline game. I think Sherando will win by 14. I think it will be a close game throughout and the Warriors will pull away at the end.
7:43 -- Sherando is up 7-0 with 7:43 left first quarter on a Kadeem Blackwood punt return. Not surprising. Sherando has always been good at special teams. Millbrook now leads 21-0 in the second quarter. Calvin Rodney had a 6-yard touchdown.
7:51 -- Skyline answers the score with a 16-yard TD run by Kieren Caison, 7-7 3:36 first quarter. The Hawks are indeed athletic, Eric, and they are showing it early on against Sherando. Strasburg is hanging with Clarke County early on. It's 0-0 end of the first quarter.
7:55 -- Oates and Millbrook are at it again. It's now 28-0 in the second quarter. Oates just threw his third TD of the game, this time to Quinn Courtney from 23 yards out.
8:03 -- Clarke County has struck first in its game with Strasburg. A 10-yard TD pass by Zach Shiley and it's 7-0, 7:52 left second quarter. Handley leads Central, 10-0, with 10:29 left second quarter. Millbrook is up 28-0 at the half. Andrew Oates is 11-for-14 for 159 yards and 3 TDs. That puts him over 1,000 yards for the season. This game is just what Millbrook needed. James Wood is up 21-0 at the half.
8:09 -- A Roger Smith 2-yard run has given Sherando a 14-7 lead with 8:20 left in the first half. I just got a correction on Oates yardage - he only has 149 yards. That still puts him over 1,000 for the season. Eric, I agree with you about the running clock. I'm glad that started using that rule a few years ago, it helps make the blowouts a little less painful.
8:18 -- Update from Clarke - the Eagles are up 7-0 at the half. Much closer than some might have thought. A week after being blown out by Luray, the Rams are hanging with the Eagles.
8:22 -- Eric, I couldn't agree more about the boxscores. The running clock is a reporters best friend. Sherando is starting to pull away a little bit. Roger Smith just added a 6-yard TD and the Warriors lead 20-7 with 2:13 left first half.
8:31 -- Sherando kicker Lukas Stump is back from an injury and has kicked a 34-yard field goal to give the Warriors a 23-7 lead with 21 seconds left in the first half. The Warriors have missed Stump, especially in the Handley game where they missed an extra-point and lost the game by 2.
8:36 -- Skyline has cut into the lead. A Tyler Eddy 94-yard kick return cuts the deficit to 23-13 at the half. Handley is up 16-0 on Central at the half. The Judges could be up by a lot more. The Falcons have turned the ball over 5 times. Three fumbles and two interceptions, but the Judges have settled for three Graham Sharples field goals. It looks like it's a good night for kickers in our area.
8:40 -- Eric, I agree the Warriors did miss Stump in the Handley game. I'm not sure how it would have turned out had he played, but certainly the Warriors would have had a better chance of winning it.
8:55 -- Bernie, that's a good observation. I think I read that somewhere recently. Millbrook is now up 35-0. Oates with his fourth TD pass. The clock is now running.
9:08 -- Clarke is up 7-0 at the end of the third. Millbrook has won 42-0. Sherando still up 23-13 in the third. A good solid win for Millbrook.
9:20 -- It's still Handley 16-0 at the end of three quarters. Sherando still leads 23-13 late in the third.
9:29 -- James Wood won 35-14. In the Clarke game, Craig reports that Strasburg's Mason Alsberry was injured and taken to the hospital after a 25-minute delay. Craig said his arms and legs were moving. Hopefully, he will be OK.
9:34 -- Handley is now up 23-0 after a 33-yard pass from Geremi Long to Vance Washington. Handley's passing game keeps improving each week. In the James Wood game, Trae Tinsman had 217 yards passing with 2 TDs.
9:37 -- Two more updates. A Ross Metheny to Dalton Boyd 21-yard TD pass has given Sherando a 30-13 lead with 9:31 left. Also, a 7-yard TD run by Shiley has given Clarke a 14-0 lead with 7:36 left.
9:42 -- A 20-yard TD catch by Andrew Thorne has cut Sherando's lead to 30-20 with 4:01 left. Strasburg has cut Clarke's lead to 14-6 with 4:15 left. Oh, the drama is in the air.
9:49 -- No more drama in Front Royal. A Metheny to Derrick Dehaney 50-yard TD pass has given Sherando a 37-20 lead with 2:59 left.
9:52 -- Bernie, I'm sure Craig is doing the best he can and will let us know what's going on very quickly. Meanwhile, Handley beat Central, 23-6.
10:08 -- Another Roger Smith TD makes for a Sherando 44-20 final. Still no word on the Clarke game. I will let everyone know as soon as I do.
10:15 -- I'm sure Craig is just busy doing interviews. Things are pretty hectic after games for us reporters. We're trying to get people for interviews. Sometimes it takes a little while for us to report the final score to the person on desk. Have some patience Bernie.
10:20 -- Finally, a final from Berryville. Clarke County, 21-6. Bernie, I don't believe in jinxes. I'm sure the Rays will get a hit soon. If they don't you may be right Chuck may not return. So they better get a hit. Luray wins over Stonewall, 41-35 in the final minutes.
10:33 -- Thanks to Jerry Carter for the Luray score. That guarantees none of the 'experts' will go undefeated this week. Oh well, there's always next week.

Wait. Did I just jinx the no-hitter? Eh. Who cares. Did Clarke County win?

Boy, this Craig guy sure is slow with the updates. Geez. Chuck might not come back to work if the Rays get no-hit tonight.

I don't see why the reporter at the Clarke County game can't call in with play-by-play. Us devoted readers need to know what's going on!

My sources say there's still a few open seats on the Clarke County bandwagon if anyone wants on.

Yeah. They should promote the guy who came up with that observation. Seems like a smart fella.

Observation of the week: "Handley is still Handley; Central is still Central."

If Sherando had Stump for the Handley game they win. He kicks it into the endzone everytime on kickoffs, and doesn't miss extra points. Remember late in the 1st half against Handley Sherando would have kicked a field goal at the end of the half, but had to go to the endzone with Ross getting sacked.

Yeah there is nothing worse than watching the game take forever to wind down. It is always nice to see kids get in, but for us doing the box scores at the end of the night, there is nothing better than that running clock. I believe Skyline will keep it close for three quarters, but Sherando's experience will finish it out in the fourth.

The best news coming out of the Millbrook game is the mercy clock will kick in soon. James Wood up 21-0 at half.

Yeah 14 sounds about right. Many people aren't giving Skyline much of a chance just based on who they have played, but their offense is very, very athletic.

Chuck officially has me jealous. The Red Sox and Rays, are you kidding me? Let's Go Sox! How close do you believe the Sherando v. Skyline game will be Tommy? 10 points difference over/under?
