A couple of weeks ago -- when I was blessed with a little more time -- I posted the question listed in the subject line as the nation grappled with the injustices in college football.
I asked you, the reader, to reply with things you would change about sports. One reader -- Irishman71 -- broke down a proposal that would borrow from the current bowl set-up and give all teams -- regardless of conference affiliation -- a shot at the ultimate prize. I'm in agreement with this Irish fellow, but I have my own proposal in mind.
Before I get to that, however, I have a new beef. Why in the world is everyone -- from national media pundits to the know-it-all perched on a barstool in your local tavern -- complaining about the Arizona Cardinals in the Super Bowl after clamoring for a college football playoff for months?
For all its flaws, the BCS was set up to match, it hoped, the top two teams in the land. You see, it wasn't always this way, as bowl tie-ins rarely pitted 1 vs. 2 or even 1 vs. 5. It was simply another week tacked onto the regular season (you know, this 'plus-1' they always talk about), and whoever finished atop the two legitimate rankings system was declared the national champ. If the coaches and media differed, there were two champs. The BCS is a much better system, but a playoff would quiet the masses, right?
Well, the Arizona Cardinals have reached the Super Bowl, and not a single person will shut up about it. It's the biggest game of the year, and we deserve to see the top two teams, people say. What? You mean like the BCS? This system you just spent months complaining about?
This just convinces me of one iron-clad truth in sports, and anything, for that matter: No matter the circumstances, people will always complain when they don't get what they want. Always.
More power to the Utah Utes, a true underdog who didn't get a shot; but damn you Cardinals for beating the best the NFL has to offer and earning your way in.
I'll piece together my playoff proposal for college football and you ladies, gents and irishmen can tell me what you think.
