She just felt like running.
Clarke County's Brianna Smith stole her 23rd base of the season in the Eagles' 13-3 home win over Rappahannock County on Saturday. The significance? It set a new school record for swipes in a single season.
One month ago, on March 27, Smith stole seven bases in a 15-0 win over Stonewall Jackson. She stole home twice in that game, and stole second, third and home in succession two different times.
The record of 22 was set in 1977.
Smith entered Saturday's game hitting .636. She leads by a half dozen steals over Strasburg's Jaclyn Ayers. Only three area players have reached double digits in steals this season.
