Sports Breakfast keeps adding celebs

The Apple Blossom Festival celebrity committee first added NASCAR's Ward Burton, outdoorsman Curtis Fleming and local product and MLS player Devon McTavish. Solid additions, sure, but when I talked to the Festival's president, Elaine Aikens, she assured me more celebrities were on the way. She was careful with her wording, careful not to make a promise she couldn't keep. But she said it was her expectation that a handful of sports stars -- not random athletes no one would care about -- could still be in the mix.

Boy was she right.

Since that conversation a couple weeks ago, the ABF/Sports Breakfast has added legendary NFL linebacker Jack Ham, former Washington Redskins Mark Moseley and Joe Jacoby, broadcaster Ken Mease and Maryland basketball star Greivis Vasquez. Not too shabby.

Ham has broad appeal, and even at 28 years of age, I'm certainly familiar. He was an eight-time Pro Bowler, four-time Super Bowl winner and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame for his accomplishments at Penn State. Oh, he also spent one year in Woodstock at MMA after high school.

To counter the slew of Steelers fans in this area, Moseley and Jacoby were added. In a press release announcing Ham's addition, there was a note about how Steelers fans were much louder than Redskins fans at FedEx in the team's most recent meeting. It'll be interesting to see what happens when these two fan bases mingle again.

Vasquez might be the neatest, most unexpected addition. He was sort of a breakout player for the Terrapins this season, and on the day that I received word that he'd be coming to Winchester, I also ran a brief in the sports section about his intentions to declare for the NBA Draft. He's not hiring an agent, so he can return to Maryland, but he'll bring with him a good story.

Motorsports, outdoors, football, basketball and soccer; the old and the young; all local products ... and a little Steelers-Redskins rivalry.

I tip my hat to the committee.
