Former Sherando Warriors star quarterback Ross Metheny has arrived in Charlottesville and is attending classes and workout sessions in anticipation for his first season of D-1 college football.
In most cases -- with the program prestige, injuries and depth the mitigating factors -- college quarterbacks use a redshirt year because their duties are far greater than any other player. Most quarterback must put on weight to deal with 300-pound defensive linemen chasing after them, but moreso, most have to grasp the playbook before leading the offense.
In a phone conversation Sunday evening, Metheny was non-committal on whether or not he'd redshirt this fall. Obviously, an injury or two makes it more likely that Metheny could see the field as a true freshman, but he acted like a rookie ready to compete for his spot.
It's certainly a great challenge, but if any student-athlete has the intelligence and drive to pull it off, it's Metheny.
