Bizarre happenings in the Valley League playoffs ...

The first round of the Valley Baseball League playoffs is in the books ... and I'm left poring over standings and statistics, trying to figure out what just happened. Here's some random nonsense:

-- All four lower seeds advanced. That's right. The VBL played a 44-game schedule to determine the participants for the eight-team postseason, as well as the seeding, and then it ultimately doesn't matter come crunch time.
-- Three of the four teams in the semifinals did not have a winning record in the regular season.
-- The top four seeds -- Front Royal, Staunton, Luray and Woodstock -- went a combined 2-8 over the last four days against the bottom four seeds.
-- Front Royal was 2-0 against Covington in the regular season, but 1-2 in the playoffs.
-- From June 25 to the end of the regular season, Front Royal was 14-2 at home. Covington took both of its playoff games at Front Royal's Bing Crosby Stadium.
-- Woodstock finished the season 0-4 against Winchester.
-- New Market and Luray played 11 times this summer. New Market won one more of those games than Luray, which was certainly a biggie.

Anybody up for a 7 vs. 8 finals? It'd only seem right.
