Festivals, scavenger hunt today

The Newtown Heritage Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday in Stephens City. On Saturday, a parade will be held at 2 p.m., George Hamilton IV will entertain at 3 and 6 p.m. and fireworks will be presented at 9:15 p.m. Other activities include an apple crate derby, arts and crafts, children's events, wagon rides and museum tours. The Delaplane Strawberry Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Sunday at Sky Meadows State Park. Activities include arts and crafts, children's activities, a petting zoo, puppet shows, games and hay rides. Shenandoah River State Park has scheduled a number of holiday weekend events. At 10 a.m. today, learn how to use a compass and test your skills on an easy course. met at Shelter 3. At 1 p.m. today, meet at the PawPaw Trail to go on a scavenger hunt. From 3 to 4 p.m., stop by Cullers Overlook to view skulls and meet animals that live in the park.

The Wayside Inn Farmers' Market will hold container garden demonstrations from 10 a.m. to noon today. Caroline Stalnaker from Mount Pleasant Farm will demonstrate lasagna gardening, a micro green flat and a window box that does not need drainage holes. The farmers' market is open from 8 a.m. to noon

Last Chance will perform from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the Strasburg Theater at 151 W. King St. in Strasburg. Call 465-1777 or go online to www.strasburgtheater.com for more information.
