May 11: Celebrate Mother's Day

Mom-friendly events

Take your mom to the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday night. Costumed actors will be make paintings come alive in the Julian Wood Glass Jr. Gallery. Free to museum members and children under 18. General admission is $8 adults, $6 seniors and students ages 7 to 18.

Enjoy a spring day with mom at Luray's Festival of Spring on Saturday. Featured at the festival this year: a 5K race, antique cars and trains, the fourth annual Duck Race, the Appalachian Air Canines 2008 Flying Fisbee Fest, children's activities, fine art and craft vendors and food and drink vendors. The Duck Race starts at 2:30. The Frisbee Fest competition is at 10 a.m.

If mom is into gardening, take her to the Garden Fair at Blandy Experimental Farm in Boyce this weekend. The fair takes place from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Activities include a plant and garden supply sale, crafts, nature walks and Arboretum tours. There will be around 100 craft, plant and food vendors at the fair.

If mom likes beer and history, take her to the Belle Grove Of Ale and History Microbrew Beer Festival on Saturday. Taste 35 specialty microbrewed beers. Music will be by The Reflex and Junkfood. The 50th Annual Apple Blossom Meet Antique Car Show will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in Jim Barnett Park in Winchester.

Moms taste wine for free at Veramar Vineyard in Berryville from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Sunday brunches, dinners

Area restaurants and merchants have announced specials for this Mother's Day weekend, and there are a number of mom-friendly events and activities that you can enjoy with mom. (Be sure to make reservations early.)

Dean's Steakhouse in Front Royal has Mother's Day specials and is offering to treat mom to dessert.

Johnny Appleseed Restaurant in New Market has a seafood platter and prime rib au jus specials on Mother's Day. Fresh flowers will be given to every mother.

Creekside Plain & Fancy will have a Mothers Day Dinner from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m., stuffed chicken breast, country ham, mashed potatoes, green beans, corn and dessert. All you can eat.

The Toms Brook Volunteer Fire Department is serving an all-you-can-eat buffet breakfast from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Fire Hall.

The Hotel Strasburg in Strasburg has a special Mother's Day Buffet planned from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Wayside Inn in Middletown will be serving a four-course meal from noon to 5 p.m.

The Strasburg Old Mill Restaurant in Strasburg will be serving a special Mother's Day brunch from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The Lone Oak Tavern in Boyce has a Mother's Day buffet from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Spring House Tavern in Woodstock is serving a full menu and dinner specials from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Live music will be served up along with dinner at Focaccia's Italian Grill's Mother's Day Weekend celebration.

Roasted turkey and the works will be served up in a Mother's Day Special at the Knotty Pine Restaurant in Front Royal.

Area stores and flower shops are gearing up for Mother's Day weekend:

On Saturday only, Better Thymes Natural Foods in Front Royal has organically grown vegetable plants on sale.

Pro Nail in Front Royal has a prom and Mother's Day special on full set and pedicures.

Jack Evans Chevrolet & Cadillac in Front Royal says mom will love their May special: a 2008 Chevy Malibu LS for $20,295.

Peeble's in Luray is advertising clothing and gifts from 30 to 60 percent off.

Baskets of Distinction in Woodstock has a Mother's Day Sale on Friday and Saturday: 25 percent storewide.

Kim's Greenhouses welcomes mom to stroll through their greenhouses on Sunday.

Mac's Greenhouse in Woodstock is offering 10 percent off a hanging basket if you bring in their ad that's appearing in the Daily.

Showalter's Orchard & Greenhouse in Timberville wants you to remember mom with flowers. They have custom planted container gardens for sale.

Peoples Drug Store in Strasburg has candy, jewelry and purses on sale for Mother's Day.

Clip & Curl Beauty Shop has gift certificates available, and a special on a month's worth of tanning.

The Plant & Flower Barn in New Market has flowers and plants for mom. They are open on Sundays.

Creekside Gifts in Winchester has the area's largest selection of Brighton gifts and more.

Treat mom with a gift certificate for a spa treatment at Tres Bella Luxury Spa and Boutique in Front Royal.

Buy a $75-plus Vera Bradley gift for your mom and receive a free small cosmetic bag May 6-11 at Wayfinder Gifts in Woodstock.

Flowers and garden tools are easy to find at C.E. Thompson & Sons in Edinburg.
