Shentel buys cable TV franchise rights

EDINBURG -- Shentel has completed the acquisition of Rapid Communications' cable assets and customers in Virginia and West Virginia.

The deal includes the rights to 50 of Rapid's former cable TV franchise areas, mostly clustered around Covington, Summersville, W.Va., and Weston, W.Va.

Beginning early next year, Shentel will begin a two-year service upgrade in the region, to include High Definition TV, Video on Demand, high-speed Internet and voice.

The transaction immediately adds about 17,650 cable customers to the Shentel family -- roughly twice the company's current cable subscriber base in Shenandoah County.
