WINCHESTER -- It's the biggest game of the year, and normally a big draw for the area's dining hot-spots.

The local real estate market is entering 2009 with a little momentum.

STRASBURG -- Valley Health will hold an open house today from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to celebrate the opening of its newest location.

Winchester-area unemployment spiked to 6.1 percent in December as companies closed their doors, furloughed workers and cut back on seasonal hiring in the midst of a yearlong recession.

WINCHESTER -- OakCrest Cos. wants to build on the success of recent efforts to revitalize the city's downtown, beginning with combining all of its own operations under one roof in the former Lewis Jones Knitting Mill at 126 N. Kent St.

STRASBURG -- Cora Anna Gnegy wants to add a new wrinkle to the state's time-honored tourism slogan.

EDINBURG -- Shentel, a Sprint Nextel affiliate, added 5,685 retail wireless customers in the fourth quarter, and 24,159 for all of 2008, the company said Friday.

WINCHESTER -- Winchester Equipment Co. will purchase High View Sales Inc.'s farm equipment business in northeastern West Virginia under an agreement announced Friday.

The Winchester area lost 600 jobs in the 12 months ending Nov. 30, largely due to recent factory layoffs, according to a Virginia Employment Commission report.

WINCHESTER -- The winter is normally a busy season for the local Virginia Employment Commission office, but this year, with the economy in recession and employers having to shed workers to survive, the agency's workload is especially heavy.

NEW MARKET -- Nine employees at Kennametal's local manufacturing facility have been laid off as part of the company's broader strategy to reduce costs and remain competitive.
