AT&T to bring 3G network to region

AT&T plans to roll out its third-generation mobile broadband network this year in communities along the Interstate 81 corridor in Virginia, including Winchester.

“Our number one priority this year is to continue to enhance our wireless network so our customers have a top notch experience every time they make a call, send a text or check an e-mail on their mobile device,” Erika K. Thompson, vice president and general manager for AT&T Mobility in Virginia and West Virginia, says in a press release.

AT&T’s 3G wireless network is currently available in nearly 350 major metropolitan areas in the U.S.

In addition to enhancing its existing 3G footprint in places like Richmond, Chesapeake and Virginia Beach, the company plans to add new cellular sites across the state to address growing demand for advanced wireless products and services, such as AT&T’s BlackBerry Bold and LG Incite.

AT&T spokeswoman Beth Gautier said the plans involve extending 3G coverage from Leesburg, along Va. 7, west through Clarke County and into Winchester and Frederick County.

Although the upgrade may involve a new cell tower or antennae on top of existing buildings, it is primarily a software overlay, she said.

Other western Virginia communities set to receive the upgrade are Harrisonburg, Staunton, Waynesboro, Roanoke, Salem and Blacksburg.
