Area jobless rate creeps up in May
The region's unemployment picture continues to dash any hopes of a quick economic recovery.
The Winchester-area jobless rate inched up to 8.2 percent in May after falling each of the two previous months, according to the Virginia Employment Commission.
Approximately 5,280 residents of Winchester, Frederick County and Hampshire County, W.Va., drew unemployment benefits during the VEC's sample week of May 10-16, an increase of 160 claims over April.
All 10 Virginia metro areas saw a jump in unemployment from April to May, though Winchester's increase of two-tenths of a point was less than the state average of nearly half a percentage point.
