Thursday, July 3, 2008 Area unemployment hits 4 percent in May Winchester-area unemployment jumped four-tenths of a point in May to 4 percent, according to the latest Virginia Employment Commission figures. Approximately 2,670 people in the local metropolitan statistical area, comprised of the city, Frederick County and Hampshire County, W.Va., filed jobless claims during the week of May 11-17. That figure was up from 2,410 claims in April. While the Top of Virginia continues to be one of the state's leaders in job growth particularly in the area of business services and health care the region is still suffering from losses in vehicle- and housing-related manufacturing, VEC Chief Economist William F. Mezger said.

FRONT ROYAL The loss of Front Royal Fitness Center is proving to be other local gyms' gain. Front Royal Fitness, at 460-S Commerce Ave., closed its doors on May 21, and has since filed for bankruptcy, according to a press release from the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Wednesday, July 2, 2008 Lake Holiday fight resumes in court on Thursday WINCHESTER The fight at Lake Holiday over property owners' assessments will continue in Frederick County Circuit Court on Thursday morning. Judge John R. Prosser is scheduled to hear arguments in a lawsuit brought by a group of property owners within the gated community in northern Frederick County. The plaintiffs are challenging the right of Lake Holiday Country Club Inc., the local property owners association, to collect tax assessments, dues and fees under Virginia law. Wednesday, July 2, 2008 Goodlatte asks for new fuel standard to help lower corn prices WASHINGTON Sixth District Rep. Bob Goodlatte and 50 fellow members of Congress have sent a letter to the administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency asking the agency to reduce the amount of ethanol mandated by the 2009 Renewable Fuel Standard to help alleviate the pressure on rising corn prices. Corn prices have increased significantly over the last few years, and coupled with increased energy prices, livestock farmers throughout the country are struggling under the weight of increased costs, Goodlatte, a Republican whose district includes Shenandoah County, states in a press release. As a result, wheat, soybeans, rice and other foods have also seen a dramatic price increase and continue to increase food costs for American consumers, the release states. Wednesday, July 2, 2008 Houlihans opens; Holiday Inn almost ready FRONT ROYAL A Houlihans restaurant and bar opened on Monday off U.S. 340-522 north of town, and the adjacent Holiday Inn and Suites is scheduled to open on July 8. Both projects are part of the Blue Ridge Shadows development, which also includes homes and a golf course. The Holiday Inn will include 98 guest rooms and 26 one-bedroom suites. The hotel also offers banquet and conference facilities, an indoor pool, and fitness center. Wednesday, July 2, 2008 New farm and food guide now available HARRISONBURG The first edition of the Shenandoah Valley Buy Fresh Buy Local food directory is now available. The free, six-page publication is a guide to local food and farming in Augusta, Bath, Highland, Page, Rockbridge, Rockingham and Shenandoah counties. It is available at farmer's markets, natural food stores, grocers, public libraries and other locations throughout the region. The directory, produced by Virginia Cooperative Extension, Shenandoah Resource Conservation and Development Council, and community supporters, is designed to facilitate valley residents' connection with fresh, locally grown food; neighboring farmers who grow the food; and those markets and restaurants that are committed to using locally grown food in their business. It also provides useful definitions of farm enterprises, agricultural statistics and many reasons for buying local. Tuesday, July 1, 2008 Planners pull plug on lighting for Marriott sign STRASBURG A sign for a new hotel can face a nearby battlefield but cannot be lighted, Strasburg's Planning Commission decided last Tuesday. At the start of last Tuesday's meeting, Justin Spence, an account manager with Heritage Signs, said the Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott wanted to place a sign on the side of the building facing the nearby Civil War battlefield. Spence said they proposed to install an opaque sign, which would be dimmer than a typical lighted sign, on that side of the building. Saturday, June 28, 2008 Strasburg shopping center plan wins approval STRASBURG Now that preliminary plans for Strasburg's first commercial center have been approved, developers can begin talking seriously with prospective tenants. The county this week approved the rezoning of the 42-acre site which fans out from the railroad crossing at Va. 55 to Interstate 81 adjacent to the Northern Shenandoah Industrial Park as well as a special-use permit to build a regional shopping center that would include restaurant, retail and hotel space and a museum. Friday, June 27, 2008 Norfolk Southern expansion kicks off FRONT ROYAL A railroad company has begun its project to expand 15 miles of tracks in Warren County. Norfolk Southern has started grading work and clearing trees along the proposed expansion route in the first phase of the project. It hopes to widen 15 miles of existing tracks by 20 feet to allow two trains to pass at once, and has already acquired the right of way for the project. Wednesday, June 25, 2008

Wednesday, June 25, 2008 Theater company signs lease at mall WINCHESTER R/C Theatres has signed a lease to occupy a spot north of Belk at Apple Blossom Mall, a spokesman with the mall's corporate parent has confirmed. The Reistertown, Md., company must still submit plans for a free-standing,16-screen complex to city officials before construction can begin. Les Morris, with Indianapolis-based Simon Property Group, which owns and operates the mall, said company policy prohibits him from discussing the lease terms.
