Sky Meadows State Park, 11012 Edmonds Lane, Delaplane, will host the following programs:
Aug. 24, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. -- Flutter By, Butterfly, which will teach about butterflies and allow a walk with others who share an interest in butterflies, with Master Naturalists Mary Alexander and Steve Malone from the Washington Area Butterfly Club at our Visitor Center. They will lead a walk along park trails in search of butterflies, assisting with netting and identification along the way. Bring binoculars, water and wear comfortable shoes.
Noon-2 p.m. -- In Her Own Words: Life During Wartime, with Amanda Edmonds, niece to Mount Bleak builders Abner and Mary Settle, who kept a journal from 1857 to 1867 recording her thoughts as the world around her fell apart and changed dramatically. This program series brings her thoughts to life. Journey back to 1863 with our costumed interpreters and hear Edmonds' journal entries read aloud. Discover, through her own words, how this young woman experienced the Civil War from her Northern Virginia home. Readings will take place on the back porch of Mount Bleak House.
1-2 p.m. -- Ice Cream Social, with hand-cranked, made of old-fashioned sweet cream. Meet on the Mount Bleak lawn for old-time games, hand-squeezed lemonade and a sample of our homemade frozen delight. For more information, call 540-592-3556.
