My grandpa went to elementary school in Round Hill. He tells me his third grade class went on a field trip to the Sniders ( Snyder's ?) Apple Orchard plant north of town one year. There were apple orchards on both sides of Route 7 the whole way. Today, Sniders is gone, the building is still used by another apple company, all the apple orchards are mostly gone, too. Of all the acres and acres of apple orchards existing in Frederick County during the 1950's, how many remain today? Maybe this is the reason the Apple Blossom Festival has dwindled...
Got to go to the west of I-81/Rt.11. Middle rd., Cedar Creek Grade, Marlboro rd, and the Apple Pie Ridge rd. I think Frederick Co. is still considered a large producer for the state but declining. Chemical cost is one thing orchardist will cite as problem and I know the stink bugs has hurt also....
