George A Bowers Sr.: An enlightening comparison

Imagine an aircraft that could take off and land vertically and that could also fold its wings for sleek mobility. In addition, it could instantly adjust its flight path in response to various conditions.

Zigzag flights are not impossible and straight trajectories are also easily accomplished. Imagine also the same machine with the ability to effortlessly maneuver on horizontal, vertical, or slanted surfaces while not airborne. These capabilities alone would make it a favorite among pilots and strategists. But add the ability to manufacture its own energy from readily available sources that it locates, absorbs and processes, and a brilliant self-generated light that can be seen from great distances and you have a truly incredible contraption.

But wait, there's more! (As the Ginsu salesman proclaims.) This amazing piece of engineering can also reproduce itself and can perform all of these functions independent of any human supervision or piloting.

Imagine the wiring that would have to be developed and the computer hardware and software necessary to run and support such a machine. What would our U.S. Air Force be willing to shell out for such advanced, currently impossible technology?

Actually, we've all held these mechanisms in our hands and kept them in our bedrooms overnight, for we have here the amazing firefly, or as we called them growing up, lightning bugs. This little creature's abilities to fly, land, crawl, feed, multiply, and glow certainly assemble an impressive resume. Indeed, it does all of these without a single gigabyte of hard drive or inch of circuitry. Nonetheless, it lights up the summer sky with beauty and excitement as it journeys from blade to leaf to trunk and back again.

Really and truly, no one would for an instant actually believe the aircraft described in the first paragraph just "happened" into existence without some manufacturer, inventor, or engineer. Such a thought would be absolutely ludicrous. Even today, when we see an airplane that possesses only a fraction of these characteristics, we know unquestionably that someone designed and manufactured it. And yet, when someone looks at the firefly, which is infinitely more intricate and versatile, and says it just evolved without any creator or designer, we call them intelligent. What's wrong with this picture?

As we enjoy the fireflies of summer, may they turn our adoration and praise to their designer and maker, the same one who designed and made us as well. And the same one who loves us with everlasting love and gave his son that we might enjoy his presence forever. Praise God for the amazing lightning bug! Blessings, George
