George Bowers Sr.: The price is right!

One of the longest running television game shows is The Price is Right. It's an interesting and fast-paced competition where contestants must guess the prices of different items. The contestant who gets the closest to the actual retail price without going over wins prizes such as cash, cars or cruises. Shoppers who have some idea of current values certainly have the advantage, but there is always some amount of guesswork involved as well. comments

George Bowers Sr. : Filling sinkholes and creating firm foundations

As residents of the Shenandoah Valley, we are very familiar with sinkholes. Many fields and woodlands in our area are pockmarked by these depressions in the ground and indicate that there may be caves nearby. In some cases, the earth actually opens up at the bottom of these sinkholes to create an entry to a cave beneath. comments

George Bowers Sr.: Nation was founded on the rule of law, not man

This July will mark 238 years since our nation's founders declared their independence from Great Britain and the heavy-handed tyrant, King George. Many of the driving issues for this historical separation can be boiled down to one underlying contrast: would the colonies be ruled by law or by man? Ultimately, thousands of our ancestors gave their lives on the battlefields of this land to settle that question and found this nation firmly on the rule of law. Within 13 years, our Constitution was drafted and ratified as the legal basis for all governments in our young nation. comments

George Bowers Sr.: Help for the homeless

Hebrews 13:2 tells us to offer hospitality to strangers, for by doing so, some have entertained angels without even knowing it. I wonder how many angels I have turned away over the years. Let me share a program that provides a good structure to welcome angels as well as fellow humans. comments

George Bowers Sr.: Our faith-filled presidents

America celebrated Presidents' Day this past Monday. Each year this day offers an opportunity to honor the 43 men who have held this highest office and recognize them for their service. It is a sad but true observation that over recent years, the faith of these great men has been intentionally buried and ignored in order to advance current social agendas. As we remember these leaders, I encourage us to revisit their lives to see what spiritual characteristics empowered them to lead our nation well. comments

George Bowers Sr.: Winter games bring families together

Whenever we hear of Winter Games, we generally think of skiing, snowboarding, figure skating and all the other events of the Olympic Games, which will be held this month in Sochi. And while I really enjoy these events, I also enjoy some other types of winter games even more: board and table games. comments

George A. Bowers Sr.: Snowy wonder points to our great creator

As I write this article, the valley is freshly coated with a new fluffy blanket of white. And aside from the inconvenience it causes to motorists, it is an amazing gift from God. Not only is it beautiful to the eye, but it recharges our water tables and aquifers, provides nitrogen to the soil and insulation to the ground, and it is a free fun medium for a multitude of winter sports. comments

George Bowers: Maximizing our footprints

We are reminded on a regular basis to minimize our carbon footprints by making wise personal environmental decisions. Driving less, taking shorter showers, and reducing energy consumption are but a few of the myriad "environmentally friendly" suggestions we have been bombarded with recently. And while Christians should be the leaders in wise stewardship of God's creation, we must remember that there other aspects of life that are more enduring. comments

George Bowers: Delivered as promised

One of the best marketing strategies for mail order businesses is to deliver exactly what is ordered by the date promised. Failure to do either of these will inevitably damage the company's reputation and hurt their future business. This Christmas, millions of packages have already been delivered to homes all across America, including our own, and hopefully most accurately fulfill what we ordered, although I'm sure some will need to be returned. comments

George Bowers Sr.: Helping others in Jesus' name

During the holidays, we are especially mindful of the blessings that we have received from our gracious God. As we reflect on these gifts, we are often moved to help the less fortunate. Many individuals and community organizations provide special help for needy families this time of year. comments
