'The Song Remembers When'

Today's high school athletic teams travel to away games, meets, or tournaments just as they did when I was on a high school team - on a yellow school bus and just as then, the coach or coaches sit in the front and the seats in the back are sacred seats where the team captain(s) lead the team in preparation for the coming athletic contest. This preparation by today's athletes is similar to what has been done for many years, but different, too. Today, the athletes use music, as did we, but in a different way. comments

County's old houses have stories to be told

If you drive slowly enough on roads in Shenandoah County, you will see old, deserted houses dotting the landscape. They may be near the road as if the road had been built right through the homestead, or they may be off in a low-lying plot better suited to protect it from storms, or they may sit majestically among old, weather-worn trees on a hillside. comments

Watching storm blow in provides enough information

As these words are being written, it is Monday afternoon, Oct. 29. Off to my left, Powell Mountain is shrouded in a bank of cloud, and North Mountain, way over to the west, sits lost in the heavy mist. Tired of the verbiage on the airwaves, I came to the front bay window to see for myself. Aunt Sookie, the full-figured cat, came too. comments

Eternal rhythms, history of words

Words, like the valley's landscape, have history. Just as "The Pike" is different than it was in the last century, words are used differently over time and thus, like our land, their usage changes. In fact, some words are invented out of need (Shakespeare is credited with coining more than 10,000 words or phrases, such as whirligig in Twelfth Night) or out of convenience, such as prioritize in the last 40 years. It is this thought that brings me to phenology, which was first used about 1884 and comes from the word phenomena plus ology, or the study of phenomena. comments

Music, silk Hawaiian shirts evoke sweet memories

Several weeks ago a large box arrived. It was from my baby sister Deborah, and it had taken her over a year to get it ready for shipping. comments

Roger Barbee: Old trees removed, allow for welcome spaces

In the past few years I have learned quite a bit about white pine trees out of necessity because our back lot has a jumbled grove of them. Like everything else, however, the their lives depend upon their foundation, and these 30 odd trees had a poor foundation. comments

Roger Barbee: Lemuel lives on in house he built

The remodeled house we live in is much different from the two-bedroom farm house Lemuel built for his bride-to-be, but what he built stands solid and is a reminder of his craftsmanship. comments

Treeing hounds and moonlit nights

Our dogs - Nolan the Shenandoah honey hound and Mickey and Callie, the beagles - have gotten serious about treeing the squirrels that come into their acre of yard to raid the bird feeders. comments

Roger Barbee: Valley survives dramatic storm

The derecho, or straight line thunderstorm, last Friday night did to us on Old Bethel Road as it did to many in the valley: the violent storm roared out of Ohio toward us and first gave a dramatic show of lightening accompanied by clashes of heavy thunder, then a slow building of wind that rushed to the intense level that drove us all to shelter, and then the horizontal rain that beat its wild rhythm on all surfaces. comments

Walking sticks support memory

Several walking sticks stand in a corner of our screened porch. All are wood. A pair of the new fiberglass ones that look more like ski poles than walking sticks, hang, never used, in the corn crib. My favorite, a bamboo pole 6 feet long, stands next to my desk, a reminder of past walks. comments
