Cody Fitchett: Primary colors, desserts

It is great to see sunshine here in Hyde Park, New York, after such a rainy weekend.

This past week at The Culinary Institute of America, I learned about negative space when it comes to art and design. I also learned about different color combinations like primary, secondary, and complementary colors. Now, knowing these different combinations of colors, I can use them in my dessert plating techniques.

This is my last week of Principles of Design class and it has been a fun ride the past three weeks. Professor Bruce Ostwald is a creative man who has made me think outside the box when it comes to art and how it ties into desserts.

Stars and Stripes was this past weekend. The CIA puts on a dance, block party, and fireworks for the students; what more could I ask for from my amazing school. My friends and I went to the dance on Saturday and danced the night away with a great DJ until 1 a.m. Sunday, we attended the block party, which had barbecue, hotdogs, and hamburgers along with an obstacle courses and free stuff [Who doesn’t love free stuff? My friend Camile once said, “if it’s free, it’s for me.” The past weekend was the perfect way to relax from the stress of finishing classes here at the CIA.

This weekend Camile and I are going to Niagara Falls with a group of friends to celebrate July 4th. Last week I received an email from my editor for the blog I write here at CIA, and she told me I had a huge fan. I was so excited to meet her, but it was going to have to wait until Monday.

Today is Monday, and I finally got to meet Evelyn Greene from public relations here at the CIA. This woman made my day, she was so excited to meet me and reads this column from her office chair every Wednesday like the rest of you guys. I am so excited to have met such an amazing person and role model.

Thank you to the Culinary Institute of America for filling my heart with joy, and my brain with so many memories that will last a lifetime. This is the part where I must run and catch my next meeting, have a great week and God bless.
