Samuel Rhodes, a graduate of Central High School and an alumnus of the school’s FFA chapter, is the winner of the 2017 National Agricultural Proficiency Award for Forest Management and Products-Entrepreneurship/Placement.
He received the award at the National FFA Convention & Expo on Oct. 27.
Rhodes placed first at the state FFA convention. During the summer, he learned he was one of only four finalists for the top award.
He is a student at Dabney Lancaster Community College, a school that specializes in forest management. He is the son of Joseph and Anita Rhodes, of Toms Brook. His FFA advisers were Sherry Heishman and Amanda Curry.
A card shower is planned for Lucille Conner Baker, who will celebrate her 95th birthday Nov. 9. Cards can be sent to 1410 N. Augusta St., Staunton, Virginia 24401.
Edinburg VFW Post 2447 will hold its last chicken barbecue of the season Saturday. Chicken will be ready by 9:30 a.m. The cost is $4 per half. Preorders, which must be picked up by 1 p.m., can be made by calling 984-4355.
