Shower

Agronomy

Thursday is the deadline to register to attend the Shenandoah County Extension Office agronomy update meeting from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Rutz’s Backyard Barbecue (formerly Creekside Plain and Fancy) in Edinburg.

Topics include slug management, fungicide use in corn and soybeans and recertification requirements for private pesticide applicators.

Celebration

The Town of New Market will hold a day-long community holiday celebration,“Tis the Season,” on  Saturday.

Activities include business open houses from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Chamber of Commerce open market from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and a parade at 5 p.m.

Following the parade will be the tree lighting, holiday music by the Stonewall Jackson High School choir and band, homemade cookies and visits with Santa at the New Market Library.

Library

Bowman Library in Stephens City will host the following programs for youth:

“Dr. Who” Christmas marathon: 1-5 p.m., Saturday for tweens and teens.

• Family film and picnic: 1-2:30 p.m., Saturday featuring “The Rise of the Guardians.” Bring a picnic lunch and blanket to enjoy while watching the movie. Library teens will be serving popcorn and lemonade.

• Chess (all ages and skill levels): 10 a.m.-noon, Saturday and Dec. 9 and 16.

• Dungeons & Dragons (ages 12-18): 1-5 p.m., Saturday and Dec. 9 and 16.

• Lego Club (elementary- and middle-school students): 4:30 p.m., Monday and Dec. 11 and 18.

• Manga Art (tweens and teens): 6-7 p.m., Monday and Dec. 18.

• Wrap up party for Young Writers program (middle- and high-school students): 6-7:15 p.m., Tuesday.

• Dance party: 4-5 p.m., Tuesday and Dec. 12 for toddlers, preschoolers and their grownups.

Groundbreaking

A groundbreaking ceremony for the Strasburg Community Garden will be held at noon Saturday at the Town Park. Volunteers are needed from 9 a.m. to noon.

The garden is a joint venture of the Lord Fairfax Soil and Water Conservation District, Town of Strasburg, many churches and organizations and Master Gardeners.

Master Gardener Carolyn Wilson will present the monthly “Adventures in Gardening” program at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Shenandoah County Library in Edinburg.

The topic will be “Joy to Your Houseplants: Tips for the Holidays and Beyond.” Fort Valley Nursery will donate plants as door prizes.

Lunch

The Mt. Clifton United Methodist Women will hold their annual country ham potpie lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Mt. Hermon Fellowship Hall on state Route 263 west of Mount Jackson. A free-will offering will be accepted.

Fundraiser

Meagan Marshall, a LuLaRoe consultant, will host a fundraiser for Family Promise of Shenandoah County from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday at 781 Spring Parkway, Woodstock.

Stuff the Truck

Re/Max Roots agents in Winchester are holding a ‘Stuff the Truck’ event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Walmart on state Route 50 near the Winchester Valley Health Center to benefit the Evans Children Home.

The following items are needed: canned goods, Bounce dryer bar refills, cooking/canola oil, freezer-ready meats of all types (packaged in 1-3 pound packages), gift cards to local restaurants, Martins, Target, Walmart and Lowes, gift certificates for haircuts, nonstick cooking spray, rubber gloves for cleaning, gift cards to Northside Lanes, Carmike Cinemas, Skyline Laser Tag or Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas, sponsorships to Bryce Resort, Massanutten Resort or other adventure activities, bathroom cleaning supplies, liquid hand soap, paper towels and toilet paper.

Items may also be dropped off at the Re/Max office at 3363 Shawnee Drive, Suite 2, Winchester.

Shoppe

White Post United Methodist Church will host a Christmas Shoppe from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday and Dec. 9. A free-will offering will be accepted.

Lunch/Learn

The Virginia Cooperative Extension will sponsor two holiday-themed lunch and learn programs at Bowman Library in Stephens City:

• Gifts from the Kitchen: noon-1 p.m., Dec. 8. Learn to make spice blueberry jam, soups in a jar and special treats. Registration deadline is Monday.

• Healthy Holiday Leftovers: noon-1 p.m., Dec. 15. Registration deadline is Dec. 11.
