The Shenandoah County chapter of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association will install 2018 officers at its meeting at 11 a.m. Thursday at Denny’s in Mount Jackson. Chapter members Dave Lewis and Linda and Jeff Delano will provide entertainment.


North Warren Fire and Rescue will host a breakfast and pictures with Santa from 7 to 11 a.m. Saturday. The cost is $8 for adults, $4 for children ages 4 to 12 and free for children 3 and younger.


Front Royal Elks Lodge 2382 will host its annual free seniors and veterans Christmas dinner and visit with Santa from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at 4088 Guard Hill Road.

Shenandoah Senior Living will host its first Festival of Trees silent auction of decorated trees from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at 103 Lee Burke Road, Front Royal.

Refreshments will be served. Santa will be present. Proceeds benefit the Alzheimer’s Association.

Woods Chapel Church will present a children’s recital followed by a Nativity musical and lighting of candles at 6 p.m. Saturday at 58 Splinter Lane, New Market.


The Shenandoah Valley Quilters Guild will hold a brunch meeting at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Sunnyside Retirement Community in Harrisonburg.

The meeting will include ‘show and tell,’ raffle and gift exchange. Those attending are asked to bring a covered dish.


Bowman Library in Stephens City will host a showing of the film “Toy Story” at 1 p.m. Saturday. Information:



St. John’s Lutheran Church will host Mocha and a Message at 6 p.m. Saturday at 3623 Back Mountain Road, Winchester.

Featured will be Christmas songs, ugliest Christmas sweater contest and bingo.


Samuels Public Library in Front Royal will hold the following programs:

• Nuturing Parenting (for adults): 11 a.m., Saturday led by The Laurel Center. Topic: discipline, praise and dealing with stress.

• Christmas cookie celebration (ages 10-older): 2 p.m., Saturday. Youth should bring one dozen cookies to share.

Lions Club

The Strasburg Lions Club omitted Hoyt Bott’s name from a press release that ran Dec. 4 about the club’s donation of a park bench and tree planting at the Strasburg Park. He was pictured in the front row, the third from the left.

School news

The Warren County School Board made the following personnel announcements at its Dec. 7 meeting:

• Warren County High School: Derek Hetz was named varsity boy’s assistant soccer coach, replacing Thomas Hodge; Joseph Owens was named indoor track head coach; Kendall Thomas was named junior varsity cheer coach, replacing Lauren Vice.

• Skyline High School: Richard Allanson was named head indoor track coach.
