A card shower is planned for Harry Helsley, who will celebrate his 74th birthday Monday. Cards can be sent to 30 Acorn Hill Lane, Woodstock, Virginia 22664.



St. Peter’s Lutheran Church will hold a Mother’s Day breakfast buffet from 7 to 10:30 a.m. Sunday at the Toms Brook Fire Hall.

The cost is $10 for adults and $6 for children under 10. Proceeds benefit the Toms Brook Cemetery Fund.


Driver safety program

AARP will conduct a classroom refresher course designed for people 50 and over from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 18 at the Frederick County Sheriff’s Administration Building, 1080 Coverstone Drive, Winchester.

Those completing the course will receive a certificate, which should reduce auto insurance costs. There are no exams. The cost is $20, and AARP members will receive a $5 discount if they bring their membership card to the class. All drivers should bring their driver’s license to class.

Shepherd University has announced the following students have been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester:

Bentonville: Kristen M. Fristoe.

Front Royal: Nemo A. Hirschberg.

Mount Jackson: Kendra B. Coffey.

Strasburg: Dakota Funkhouser and Makayla L. Vargas.


Essay winner

Ivy Warnell, a student at Strasburg High School, has been named a valley regional winner in an essay contest sponsored by the Virginia Bankers Association Education Foundation.

She received a $2,500 scholarship for her essay about her experience participating in Bank Day on March 20 at First Bank. Her essay will be eligible to win another $5,000 at the statewide contest.

There were six regional winners and six honorable mentions. Over 450 students participated in the regional program at 35 banks in Virginia.
