Chicken barbecue to benefit Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church will be sold starting at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Wholesome Foods barbecue pit in Edinburg, Holtzman Oil in Mount Jackson and the church at 5983 Main St., Mount Jackson. The cost is $4 per half.

Holiday closings

The following offices will be closed Monday in observance of Memorial Day:

• Shenandoah County Library in Ednburg. The library will reopen at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

• Shenandoah County Extension Office in Woodstock.

• All branches of the Handley Regional Library (Bowman, Clarke County and Handley). Libraries will reopen at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

• Belle Grove Plantation south of Middletown.


The Literacy Center in Winchester will offer adult classes in computer basics in Spanish from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesdays for five weeks. No childcare is available. Information: 540-536-1648.


The Shenandoah County Extension office in Woodstock has announced the following activities:

• Youth Meat Quality Assurance workshop will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the County Government Center in Woodstock. Registration: 540-635-4549.

• 4-H teen counselor training will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Extension office.

• 4-H/FFA sheep, goat and swine tagging and weigh-in will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. June 2 and 7-9 a.m. June 3 at the County fairgrounds in Woodstock.

Samuels Public Library in Front Royal has scheduled the following activities:

• The Maker Club meeting: 4:30 p.m., Tuesday for school-aged children. The theme will be about sports.

• Toddler story time: 10:15 a.m., Wednesday and Thursday. The program will be about furry pets.

• Preschool story time: 11 a.m., Wednesday and Thursday. The program will be about furry pets.
