Front Royal Rotary awards scholarships

Four Warren County students were presented scholarships at the May 26 meeting of the Rotary Club of Front Royal.

• Sarah Chichester, a senior at Skyline High School, received a $4,000 scholarship. She plans to attend Lord Fairfax Community College and George Mason University to study sociology and psychology and then pursue a master’s degree in public health. She is the daughter of Lynn and Richard Downs, of Front Royal.

• Dan Kurzenknabe, a senior at Skyline High School, received a $4,000 scholarship. He plans to major in theater at New York University. He is the son of Richard and Catherine Kurzenknabe, of Front Royal.

This year, the club also awarded scholarships to two students going into technical careers.

• Jacob Freeman, son of Jackie Lucas and Larry Freeman, both of Front Royal, is a senior at Skyline High School and has spent two years in the Blue Ridge Technical Center’s culinary program. He plans to pursue a degree in culinary arts at the Institute of Art in Arlington. He will receive a $3,500 scholarship.

Daniel Kurzenknabe

• Jerry Lackovitch, son of Jerry and Amy Lackovitch, of Front Royal, is a senior at Warren County High School and studied computer networking at Blue Ridge Technical Center, which included dual-enrollment through Lord Fairfax Community College. He plans to pursue a career in cyber security. After completing coursework at LFCC, he will transfer to George Mason University. He will receive a $1,500 scholarship.

The Rotary Club of Front Royal has awarded $129,760 in scholarships to 52 students over the past 19 years.

Funding to support the program is generated through the xlub’s annual golf tournament and through sponsors. This year’s golf tournament will be held June 22 at Blue Ridge Shadows Golf Course.
