Get pampered at women’s health festival
WOODSTOCK – Bring your sisters, mom and girlfriends to get pampered at the May 20 GLOW festival.
The first GLOW: Gals Living Out Wellness Festival is a chance for women to have fun, get pampered and learn about resources available to women. Pam Murphy, executive director of the Shenandoah Community Health Clinic, said she wanted to put this event together to give women a chance to relax and have fun for all the hard work they do every day.
“It’s a day for women to be enriched and empowered with taking control of their lives and their health,” she said.
This year’s keynote speaker, Elena Sonnino, is a Martha Beck certified life coach, yoga teacher, cancer survivor and a mom, Murphy said.
She said Sonnino’s talk, “Cancer, Epic Belly Flops, and Puppy Love: Lessons to Embrace Your Inner Shine and Live the Life You Really Want,” is focused around “trying to help women celebrate who they are and feel good about taking hold and trying to be the person they were meant to be.”
Other activities throughout the day, she said, include short fitness samplers of low-impact exercises, massages, wine tastings, sip and paint, and a speed date a doctor where women can ask health questions of doctors who will be at the event. Vendors will also be on hand throughout the festival.
“It’s a fun and festive environment,” she added.
Talks will be held throughout the day, Murphy said, including taking control of your financial future, the fitness equation, spice up your life about the health benefits of spices in food, and sex after 30 – about hormonal, emotional and bodily changes that occur throughout your life.
She said she had heard reactions from people who plan on attending the event, saying that they are looking forward to a “girls getaway” and that it is a great way to celebrate National Women’s Health Week, which begins on Mother’s Day.
She added sge hopes women take advantage of the different events taking place throughout the day and that she would like this to become an annual event for the community.
