Mayfest kicks off summer season

The 35th annual Mayfest will bring a weekend of festivities to downtown Strasburg with new events for all ages.

Mayor Rich Orndorff said he’s excited to put this annual event together with over 10,000 in attendance each year. The event kicks off Friday evening and runs through Sunday.

“We’ve got a pretty full weekend,” he said. “Mayfest is the kick-off to the summer season.”

Orndorff said the festival is sponsored by Strasburg’s Chamber of Commerce and is its largest fundraiser, “but it is also the largest festival that is held in Strasburg annually.”

He said a variety of new events taking place this year include a murder mystery musical by Strasburg High School students, the popular escape room, the corn hole street toss tournament, laser tag, and an open mic to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the festival.

There also will be food concession stands, a carnival, street dancing, duck racing, a parade, a slot and model car show, and beer and wine garden, Orndorff added. A kid’s Fun Fest Zone will be set up with pony rides, laser tag, inflatable bounce houses, face painting and balloon artists.

Music performances by crowd favorites The Instigators and John Richards and The Virginians will keep the beat going, along with Cazhmiere.

Orndorff added that the festival gives local organizations an opportunity to set up information booths and  showcases the town’s businesses.

The festival sponsor for Mayfest is First Bank, along with the official hotel sponsor Ramada Strasburg.
