A card shower is planned for Edith Didawick, who will celebrate her 85th birthday on Sunday. Cards can be sent to 119 Windsor Knit Road, Edinburg, Virginia 22824.



The Rotary Club of New Market will hold a luncheon meeting at noon Wednesday at the Shenvalee Golf Resort in Miller Grille.

The program will be a briefing by the club’s golf committee on the annual fundraising tournament on Sept. 6.  Information:



The Woodstock Clothes Closet will hold a sale Thursday through Saturday at 110-C E. High St.

Everything on Thursday will be half off and Friday and Saturday, 50 cents.

Hours are Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.



The Shenandoah County Extension Master Gardeners will be available to answer home horticulture questions from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Strasburg Farm Market at Pot Town Organics. Information: 459-6140.



Samuels Public Library in Front Royal has scheduled the following activities Saturday:

  • Jewelry by Design-Beadalicious workshop: 10:30 a.m.-noon, for adults and mature children. Registration required.
  • Discuss This: 2 p.m., for people inspired by good books, articles, movies and art. Refreshments served.

St. John’s Lutheran Church in Winchester will host “Mocha and a Message,” a contemporary worship service with coffee and dessert, at 6 p.m. Saturday.

An offering will be accepted to benefit community outreach programs. Bingo will be played afterward.



The Shenandoah Valley Quilters Guild will meet at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Sunnyside Retirement Community in Harrisonburg.

Debe Thomas from Patchwork Plus will present a program on picture piecing. There will also be show and tell, a raffle and refreshments.

Thomas will lead a workshop creating a butterfly block in the afternoon. Information, registration


Yard crawl

Several churches and organizations in Fort Valley will hold a yard crawl beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday.

A map with sale locations will be available at Oak Level United Methodist Church, 1809 Camp Roosevelt Road. Signs will also be placed at each site.


Food program

The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank is participating in the USDA’s free summer food service program for children at risk of going hungry beginning Monday through July 20 at Lutheran Family Services, 250 First Woods Drive, Winchester.

A morning snack will be served from 10 to 10:15 a.m. and an afternoon snack will be served from 1:45 to 2 p.m.




The Warren County School Board has announced the following appointments:

• Wendy Brown is transferring to Warren County Middle School to be head secretary/bookkeeper.

• Dawn Catlett is transferring to Hilda J. Barbour Elementary School.

• Katherine Hyde will be a music teacher at Leslie Fox Keyser Elementary School.

• Caitlin Himelright will be an art and music teacher at A.S. Rhodes Elementary School.

• Bethany Kelly will be an English teacher at Skyline Middle School.

• Ashley Mitchell will be a fourth-grade teacher at Leslie Fox Keyser Elementary School.
