SU, Handley library to hold Rockin’ the Library event
Shenandoah University will hold its 32nd annual Children’s Literature Conference “Once Read, Never Forgotten: Creating Readers One Book at a Time” Monday through June 30, and the public is invited to its second Rockin’ the Library event Monday on the steps of the Handley Regional Library.
The event is free and open to the public and starts at 5 p.m. Monday at the library.
Children’s Literature Conference Director and Shenandoah University Professor of Education Karen Huff said this is the second year for the event that had over 200 people in attendance last year. This year, they will have two award-winning guest authors Jon Scieszka and Mac Barnett who will talk about their work, specifically “Battle Bunny,” which they co-authored.
“I expect an even larger crowd this year because the authors are very popular,” she added. “In addition to the authors the children in attendance will receive a book.”
The authors will arrive by police-escorted motorcade by the Handley High School football team and the Millbrook High School cheerleaders for the opening of the second Rockin the Library event, she said. Also, to celebrate Battle Bunny’s birthday, there will be cupcakes, music and dancing. The event is geared toward elementary school students and their parents.
“Everyone enjoys the event because they have an opportunity to meet authors,” she added.
The Children’s Literature Conference will be held Monday through Friday at Shenandoah University and serves as a professional development conference for teachers and librarians to learn from and interact with internationally renowned children book authors and illustrators, according to a Shenandoah University news release.
