Civil War ball returns to battlefield
WINCHESTER – The Kernstown Battlefield Association kindly requests the pleasure of your company at its second annual Civil War Ball at 7 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $25 a person and the event is open to all ages.
Ball organizer Susan Golden is extremely proud of the event.
“Most people will drive to Gettysburg for an event like this,” she said, adding that being able to offer something like this to the local community allows Civil War buffs an opportunity to experience the life Americans had during the war.
Dancing was enjoyed by almost everyone during the Civil War. During the 1860s, balls were one way to forget, if only for a night, the destruction and losses due to war.
Golden and her staff are able to put on this event with the help of volunteers. Last year, they had more than 50 participants. She said she is hoping to add a few more participants to the list this year.
Period costumes are optional, she said, but they do require Sunday best. Music will be provided by Second Virginia Calvary String Band and dance masters from the Shenandoah Valley Civil War Era Dancers will be on hand to call the dances.
Refreshments will be provided as well as tours of the battlefield.
Proceeds from ticket sales go back into the Kernstown Battlefield for education and preservation. Tickets may be purchased at the Kernstown Battlefield Visitor’s Center, 610 Battle Park Drive, Winchester, or by contacting SMGolden@aol.com.
