A card shower is planned for Robert and Marion Strother, who will celebrate their 61st wedding anniversary Friday. Cards can be sent to 398 Alsberry St., Strasburg, Virginia 22657.


Handley Library in Winchester will host its annual Harvest Hoedown from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Monday. It will feature stories, songs and a puppet show. Children are encouraged to dress in costume. Information: www.handleyregional.org.


Seth Thatcher, vice chairman of the Frederick County School Board representing the Opequon District, will be the speaker at the luncheon meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Old Town Winchester at noon Monday at the George Washington Hotel in Winchester.

Retired Teachers

Karen Whetzel, of New Market, and president of District G Virginia Retired Teacher’s Association, attended the association’s board of directors meeting Oct. 2-3 in Richmond.

She also attended a memorial service for deceased members, which included 10 members from District G.

The keynote speaker was Tom Nicholls, senior legislative representative for the National Retired Teachers Association. Jeanne Chenault and Michael Cooper from the Virginia Retirement System gave a full report about VRS funding.
