Even four-legged friends can participate in Halloween

WINCHESTER – For adults and children alike, Halloween is the one time a year it’s acceptable to dress up as Wonder Woman or Captain Hook, a zombie or a princess. But for shoppers of Posh Pets Boutique in Winchester, Halloween is just one more excuse to dress up their four-legged friends.

Lanette Orduna, owner of Posh Pets Boutique, has seen dogs, cats and even guinea pigs dressed up for Halloween.

“Owners get just as excited about dressing up their pets as they do about themselves or their children,” Orduna said. “It’s really just about being creative.”

Over the years Orduna has seen pets dressed up as hot dogs, dragons, and pirates.

“We have one customer who every year does something related to coffee, because her dog’s name is coffee,” Orduna said. “It’s amazing to see how creative she can be.”

The sky really is the limit on costumes for Halloween. Popular themes this year include dogs dressed up as squirrels, cheerleaders and even a pumpkin spice latte. Cats are playing their part by dressing up as witches, firefighters and bees.

For owners with multiple pets, themes are great, Orduna said.

“One year we had a group dress up as a wedding party,” Orduna said. “It’s among one of my favorites.”

Pets will be out and about with their owners downtown during the Old Town Winchester Spooktacular on Saturday.  A pet parade will take place at 11 a.m on the Loudoun Street Mall. Multiple winners will be announced for best in show, best group theme, best owner and dog. Gift certificates will be awarded to the winners.
