WOODSTOCK – Early bird registration for the 8th annual Woodstock Turkey Trot ends Tuesday.

Katie Freakley, human resource manager for Regulus Group and an organizer of the trot, looks forward to this event every year.

“Our community comes together to kick off the holiday season the Saturday before Thanksgiving,” Freakley said. “It’s really an effort not to just raise money for charity but to promote togetherness for a cause.”

The trot is a charity-based fun run/walk/trot for all ages that promotes fitness, Freakley explained. There are three events: A Tenny K for children, which is the “cutest thing you’ll ever see,” she said, and a 5k/10k race. “Participants can trot, walk, run, skip, whatever their hearts desire.”

Proceeds from this year’s trot will benefit Shenandoah Southern Wellness Center. More than $48,000 has been collected to aid charities in Shenandoah County during the eight years since the event began. All efforts go right back to the county, Freakley explained.

For Freakley, the trot means a lot in terms of community spirit.

“We have so many people that make this event possible,” Freakley said. “Their willingness to volunteer is incredible.”

“We’re really proud of this event,” she said. “Every year it gets bigger and bigger. Who would’ve  thought we’d still be here eight years later.”
