Local florists share winning flower tips for Mother’s Day
Local florists say there’s still time to send flowers for Mother’s Day, which is Sunday.
Charles Hepner, owner of Valley Flower Shop and Greenhouse INC in Woodstock, said Mother’s Day is a perfect example of an occasion to send a flower arrangement that is as special and unique as mom is.
“We see a variety of requests for fresh floral arrangements as well as hanging baskets or patio pots,” Hepner said. “Especially now that spring has arrived, people want to give the gift of color.”
Popular Mother’s Day flowers include lilies, roses, mums, daisies and orchids.
Whether it’s a bouquet of hydrangeas or a mix of peonies and garden roses, Hepner said it’s important to pay attention to the significance of each flower. Carnations signify a mother’s love while lilies signify purity and beauty. Daisies signify loyal love.
Betty Showers, owner of Fussells Florist in Front Royal, said a nice mix of pretty flowers will brighten mom’s day. For those who aren’t sure where to start, she suggested knowing mom’s favorite color or flower.
“Once they’ve selected a color wave or have a flower for inspiration, then it’s all about creating,” Showers said. “There really aren’t any rules when it comes to arranging the perfect Mother’s Day arrangement. As long as it brightens her day – that’s what matters.”
Creativity is something Showers said she values in her shop.
“We like when our customers come in and put their floral arrangements in our hands,” she said. “If they come in with a price point and lets us create, they’re more likely to love what they get.”
For those looking for a bit more structure, both shops offer books for their customers to shop from.
Give green-thumbed moms a gift that provides lasting beauty all season long. A hanging basket or patio pot create perfect blooms that will last all season long.
Valley Flower Shop has a wide selection of fresh plants and hanging baskets that include mini petunias and geraniums.
“Some mothers want something that they can admire and will uplift their spirits throughout the entire season,” Hepner said. “Because they last longer and can easily decorate any space.”
Other florist tips include avoid waiting until the last minute to place orders, and shop neighborhood florists – not online.
Showers suggests ordering a week to a few days before Mother’s Day.
Hepner said they have the customer’s best interest at heart.
“At the end of the day, we want their experience to be a pleasant one. Shopping online doesn’t always ensure that the floral arrangement delivered will be what was ordered. Instead, we’d rather have our customers come into the shop and tell us what they’re looking for. That way there won’t be any surprises,” he said
Both florists said they deliver the entire week of Mother’s Day and Saturday. Both businesses are closed on Sunday.
