Legion to host country music tribute show Saturday
Shenandoah Post 77 of the American Legion of Strasburg will host a country music tribute show at 4:30 p.m. Saturday honoring Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline and Hank Williams at the American Legion River Lot.
Organizer Steve Spence said that over the years the American Legion of Strasburg has tired to host various music events but had difficulties with attendance, weather and other community events.
“We’ve often talked about ways to use the park for music and fundraising events,” Spence said. “Often people aren’t aware of what the Legion does. We help veterans deal with various scenarios while providing assistance with transportation to doctor and hospital appointments, all while providing family support. We thought this would be a great way to bring the community together to celebrate some great time-honored tunes while helping their fellow legionnaires.”
Spence said growing up in the 1960s was where his love for music really came from. He played the banjo in a band and traveled to Watermelon Park, Pennsylvania and Maryland for park shows.
“I remember getting to see George Jones at Sunset Park in Pennsylvania,” he said. “I got to see a lot of national music acts grow up. I guess you can say I want other people to appreciate good old-fashioned music like I do.”
Artists to appear during Saturday’s event include Robbie Limon as Hank, Tracey Wygal as Patsy and Stephen Edwards Horst as Johnny.
Spence said all three have performed their tributes to critical acclaim at various venues in and around the mid-Atlantic region.
“Over the years the Legion has been improving the park,” he said. “The Legion has made the site available to area neighbors for family reunions, wedding reception and other civic events.”
Food, provided by the Legion, will be available for sale and will include barbecue, hot dogs and french fries.
