Strasburg police to hoop it up with youth on Saturday

STRASBURG – Members of the  Police Department will trade in their uniforms for basketball gear Saturday for the first ever Scoops & Hoops event hosted by Strasburg Assembly of God, Dottie Holden, and the Strasburg Police Department.

Olivia Hilton, town event planner said, Strasburg Police Chief Wayne Sager has been making community engagement and community policing a focus for the department and he’s planning some events that will allow youth to engage with his officers in a meaningful way.

“The more activities like this that they host, the more that Strasburg families will see the PD as a part of their community and recognize that they’re here for all of us,” Hilton said.

Sager said Dottie Holden at Strasburg Assembly of God approached him about hosting Saturday’s event as a way to bring families in and around the Strasburg community together with the police who serve them.

“It’s critical that we continue to move forward and expand our relationships with the community,” Sager said.

JP’s Snowcones will provide free snowcones while the Police Department will be grilling up hot dogs.

Door prizes will also be awarded.

Hilton said instead of the traditional H-O-R-S-E concept, Strasburg youth will be able to challenge officers to a game of P-I-G.

“We’re just really looking forward to playing basketball with the youth,” Sager said. “And seeing the community turn out for such a fun event.”
