Strasburg Film Festival slated for next weekend

Local film buffs will have a busy weekend when the first Strasburg Film Festival starts Nov. 9.

Hosted by the Shenandoah Film Collaborative, the three-day festival will feature 220 short and feature-length films from filmmakers from around the world. Several venues around Strasburg, including the Box Office Brewery and the Grey Lotus, will host the screenings. Aside from the films, the festival will also feature discussions after the films.

Daniel Feldbusch, director of the festival and the Shenandoah Film Collaborative, said the decision to host the festival in Strasburg was because he felt the town was perfect for the event.

“There’s a lot happening within this little community,” Feldbusch said. “King Street is becoming an excellent case study as to how a small business can succeed in rural America. It’s an excellent mixture of history and arts. We wanted to catch onto this wave of change within the community.”

He explained the screenings will be held in town businesses to help increase economic development in town, adding that the festival will encourage people to explore Strasburg and its many shops, museums and historical sites.

Film showings will begin 10:30 a.m. Nov. 9 at the Box Office Brewery, the Grey Lotus, and Borden Lumber and Hardware, and will run until 10 p.m. Screenings on Nov. 10 will begin at 10:30 a.m. and will run until 8 p.m. Screenings on Nov. 11 will begin at 10:30 a.m. and will end at 5:15 p.m.

Feldbusch said that all ticket sales will benefit the Shenandoah County Public Schools’ theater programs.

“We feel like we’ll be able to give teachers more flexibility to think outside of the box when it comes to performing stage plays or theater with students,” Feldbusch said.
