Kelsey Ryan, an eighth-grader at the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind in Staunton, was recognized at the Staunton VFW banquet and awards ceremony Jan. 8 as one of the top winners for participating in the "patriot's pen" essay contest titled "Why We Should Honor Our American Veterans."

She is the daughter of Bobby and Cyrene Ryan of Woodstock and the granddaughter of Harry and Emmy Helsley of Woodstock and Sadie Ryan of Strasburg.
