Card shower

A card shower is planned for Jane Irwin, who will celebrate her 80th birthday Feb. 25.

Her address is 4805 Stoney Creek Road, Edinburg 22824.

A celebration will be held on Saturday from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Valley Gospel Church in Maurertown.

College news

Leah Hawkins has been named to the dean's list at Shenandoah University for the fall semester.

A music education major, she is the daughter of Wayne and Miranda Hawkins of Edinburg.


Brian and Caren Cline of Woodstock have announced the birth of a daughter, Bailee Elizabeth, on Jan. 22 at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital.

Grandparents are David and Bernice Carte of Edinburg and Lee and Debbie Cline of Woodstock.

Garden club news

Cindy Frenzel of the Friends of the North Fork of the Shenandoah River presented the program at the Feb. 5 meeting of the Shenandoah Garden Club.

Members purchased trees for the W.O. Riley Park Arboretum in memory of Edie Watson and a brick in front of the courthouse. They are continuing to recycle cell phones and printer cartridges.

College news

Jonathan McKinney of Woodstock is featured in Bridgewater College's production of George Bernard Shaw's "Arms and the Man."

The play will be presented Thursday through Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. at Cole Hall. Tickets are $6 or $5 for students and seniors. The box office phone number is 828-5631.

McKinney is a freshman, majoring in communication studies.

Fort Valley

Library news

The Fort Valley Library has acquired the following adult books:

"Gardening Made Easy -- Vols. 1 & 2"; "While My Sister Sleeps," Delinsky; "Very Valentine," Trigiani; "Bone By Bone," O'Connell; "The Break Through," Ifill; "Isn't That Lewis Carroll?," Miller; "Of Hearth and Home," Condon; and "Guiness World Records 2009 Gamers Edition."

The Fort Valley Library has received the following children's books:

"Most Loved in All the World," Hegamin; "Warriors: Escape from the Forest," Hunter; "Warriors: Into the Woods," Hunter; "Don't Read This and Other Tales of the Unnatural," Hiasson; "Knucklehead," Scieszka; "Dinosaur vs. Bedtime," Shea, Sabi and Reibstein; and "My Animals," Deneux.

New Market

Garden club news

Bill Strickland discussed birding at the Feb. 16 meeting of the New Market Garden Club.

Ingrid Flowers and Viginia Thompson received blue ribbons for potted plants.

4-H news

The following were winners in the Shenandoah County 4-H presentation contest:

Senior: Maggie Crisman, Kelsey Powers-Barb, Abbey Schechtel, Kohei Nakazawa and Chihiro Shimamura.

Intermediate: Alysia Coffelt, Bridgid Crisman, Emma Sche-chtel, Bethany Gochenour, Rachel Harriman, Bobby Loveland and Wyatt Petersen.

Junior: Kristin Derflinger, Nicole Bake, Ethan Goch-enour, Hannah Orndorff, Tiffany Heishman, Niki Funkhouser, Sully Eagle and Kennedy Eagle.
