Festival princesses

Five local women have been named princesses in the court of the queen of the 82nd Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival, April 24-May 3.

Christa M. Doerwalt, daughter of Cee Ann Davis and William Hammack of Winchester and Jennifer and Hartmut Doerwalt of Pawcatuck, Conn., and granddaughter of Lily Viens and Christel Doerwalt of Winchester, is a freshman at the University of Virginia. A Spanish major with a premedical concentration, she is an Echols Scholar, member of Echols Council and an adult GED tutor. She is a graduate of Handley High School where she was an A Scholar with distinction and National AP Scholar and won both local and regional science fairs.

Lindsay M. Jenkins, daughter of Donna and Wayne Jenkins of Winchester, is a freshman at Potomac State College. A criminal justice major, she is treasurer of the Criminal Justice Club and a member of the women's soccer team and the 2008 homecoming court. She is a graduate of Millbrook High School where she received the Pioneer Spirit Award and was a varsity cheerleader.

Jessica N. Juergens, the daughter of Tricia and Scott Juergens of Winchester and granddaughter of Jacqueline and Charles Spaid of Winchester and Judy and David Juergens of Nellysford, is a freshman at Bridgewater College. A biology and pre-pharmacy major, she is a member of the Bridgewater PreMed Society, Young Democrats and Habitat for Humanity. She is a graduate of Handley High School where she was a member of the Anchor Club.

Allison B. Maddox, the daughter of Cynthia and Charles Blough of Hume and Nolan Maddox of Philadelphia, and granddaughter of Jane and Arthur Parrish of Winchester, is a freshman at Virginia Tech. A biochemistry major, she is a member of the girls rugby team and recipient of the Virginia Tech Pamplin Merit Scholarship. She is a graduate of Handley High School where she was a member of the National Honor Society, Anchor Club and editor of the yearbook.

Katherine R. Schroth, daughter of Robyn and John Schroth of Winchester and granddaughter of Elizabeth Hart of Winchester, is a freshman at Penn State University. She is a member of the Reformed University Fellowship-Christian campus ministry.

She is a graduate of Handley High School where she was a senior class historian and a member of the National Honor Society and Hilltop Chorus. Her aunt, Mary Angela Schroth, was a little maid in 1957.

School news

Parents of the class of 2009 at Handley High School are seeking donations for a drug- and alcohol-free graduation party.
