Military news

Air Force Airman Jeffrey W. Martin graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base at San Antonio.

The son of Lillian Martin of Winchester, he is a 2007 graduate of Handley High School.

Scott Port has been promoted to the rank of sergeant major in the U.S. Army Reserve.

An operations sergeant assigned to the Defense Attaché Office in Berlin, Germany, he is scheduled for assignment as an analyst at the Department of Defense in Washington, D.C.

He is the son of William E. Port of East Wareham, Mass., and Carolyn B. Warner of Linton, Ind. His wife, Melanie, is the daughter of Harry D. and LouAnn Pugh of Winchester.

Port, who has served in the military for 28 years, is a 1981 graduate of Southwest High School in Jacksonville, N.C. He received an associate degree in justice administration from Hagerstown (Md.) Community College in 1987 and a bachelor's degree in political science from Excelsior College in 2002.

The son of Alex Simpson of Gore and brother of Travis Simpson of Winchester, he is a 2006 graduate of James Wood High School.

Air Force Airman Austin K. Miles graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base at San Antonio.

The son of Jon Miles of Winchester and Margret Redman of Brandywine, Md., he is a 2008 graduate of James Wood High School.

Air National Guard Airman Andrew Mossholder graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base at San Antonio.

The son of Max and Anne Mossholder of Winchester, he is a 2007 graduate of Sherando High School.
