College news

Timothy Craver, formerly of Maurertown, received a master of divinity degree from Ashland Theological Seminary on June 6.


Military news

Marine Corps 2nd Lt. Mark A. Capansky of Woodstock graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and was commissioned to his current rank in the U.S. Marine Corps.

He is the son of Navy Cmdr. Mark A. and Navy Capt. Polly M. Capansky, both retired. A 2004 graduate of Central High School, he joined the Marine Corps in June 2005.

4-H news

The Shenandoah County Extension Office is accepting applications for its New Market 4-H Day Camp for ages 5-8 on July 6-8.

Registration may be made by calling 459-6140.

School news

Emily Taff and Kyle Dill, students at Peter Muhlenberg Middle School, will attend the Summer Regional Governor's School for the Performing and Visual Arts, Northwest.

Taff was chosen for jazz band and Dill for excellence in theater.

The following Muhlenberg students will attend the Blue Ridge Environmental Studies Regional Governor's School:

Brady Baker, Lauren Didawick, Katelyn Foltz, Emma Lineberry, Jacob Lineberry, Amanda Orndorff, French Price, Kathryn Ritenour and Ariel Rudy.


College news

Ricardo Martinez graduated with highest honors with a bachelor's degree in music, instrumental performance in jazz studies and percussion from New York University. He received the Founders Award for having the highest grade point average.

Martinez plans to live in New York and pursue a career in jazz performance and composing. He is the grandson of Eugene and Beverly Polk of Edinburg.

Mt. Jackson

Girl Scout news

Jessica Shenk earned the Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouts. Her project provided improvements to the town park.

A member of Troop 562, she is the daughter of Cathy Shenk and Gary Downey of Mt. Jackson.

Toms Brook

College news

Samantha Schaffstall of Toms Brook graduated from Randolph College with a bachelor's degree in economics on May 17.

Abby and Harold H.J. "Bear" Bischoff II of Strasburg have announced the birth of a son, Aiden Levi, on April 22 at Winchester Medical Center.

Grandparents are Donna and John F. Horan Jr., Anna and William L. Stover Jr. and Joan and Michael Bischoff Sr., all of Strasburg. Great-grandparents are Don R. Cook and Linda Dillard, both of Harrisonburg, William L. Stover Sr. of Winchester and Janet Smith of Strasburg.
