Fair adds new music acts this year

BERRYVILLE -- Aside from musical performers, the lineup of attractions at the 55th Clarke County Fair remains the same as last year.
Organizers are banking on the popularity of events, such as the derbies, races and contests.
The fair starts Sunday at the Ruritan Fairgrounds on Va. 7-Business, and runs through Aug. 15.
Fair President Bill Milleson acknowledged Wednesday the lack of new events at the fair.
"If it's the same as it was last year, it's gonna be a little better, that's what we hope," he said.
New this year to the fair will be the Worship and Praise Band, scheduled to play in the grandstand at 5 p.m. on Wednesday. Gospel Night in the grandstand at 8 p.m. on Thursday will feature Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver. Tickets to this event are $15 for grandstand seats and $18 on the track.
Country singer Jake Owen will perform in the grandstand at 8:30 p.m. Aug. 15. Tickets are $20 for grandstand seats and $25 on the track.
Gates open at 5 p.m. Monday with carnival rides to start at 6 p.m. Also that night, the Little Miss Clarke County Fair contest in the grandstand begins at 6 p.m., followed by the pig scrambles for Clarke County residents only in the new track area.
On Tuesday, the fair will accept agriculture, horticulture and floral exhibits from 9 a.m. to noon. Sheep, rabbit and poultry shows take place in the Show Barn starting at 9 a.m. Gates open at 10 a.m.

A pet show will be held in the show barn at 5 p.m. All exhibits, except floral, will be open to the public starting at 6 p.m. Goat shows will be held in the show barn at 6:30 p.m.
Carnival rides open at 6 p.m., and the fair will be offering a ride-all-night special for one price. The figure 8 demolition derby will start at 7 p.m. at the new track.
Wednesday is Senior Citizen and Children's Day, featuring free admission into the fair for anyone 62 or older and 15 or younger until 5 p.m.
The junior beef showmanship contest will be held in the show barn at 10 a.m.
A horseshoe pitching event will be held for people 62 and older at 1 p.m., while the Berryville Baptist Rascals puppet show will be held in the grandstand at that time.
The pretty animal contest is at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, followed by the Berryville Bumblebee's animal parade in the show barn at 6 p.m. The interstate truck and tractor pull will be held at the new track at 6:30 p.m.
Thursday's events include the 4-H horse and pony show in the new horse ring at 9 a.m., the sheep and goat Olympics in the infield at 9:30 a.m., the dairy show at 10 a.m., the junior swine show at 4 p.m. in the show barn and the bunny carrot eating contest at 6 p.m.
Friday events begin at 9 a.m. with the Clarke County Ruritan hunter horse and pony show in the new horse ring. The tractor driving contest also will be held at 9 a.m. The round robin showmanship contest will be held at 10 a.m. in the show barn.
The livestock bowl takes place at 1 p.m. in the show barn, followed by the presentation of the special 4-H and FFA awards at 5:30 p.m.
Carnival rides open at 6 p.m. At the same time, the lawn mower race will be held at the infield. Berryville Bumblebee's animal parade will take place in the show barn at 6:30 p.m. The rabbit scramble is at 7 p.m. Bull riding will be featured on the new track at 8 p.m.
The western and gaited horse and pony show will be held in the new ring at 9 a.m. The sale of 4-H and FFA livestock will take place at 9 a.m., followed by the milk auction. Open class horseshoe pitching will take place at 10 p.m.
The auto demolition derby will be held at 3:30 p.m.
"So we're looking forward to a good week," Milleson said. "If the rain holds off, we'd like everybody to come down."
